Taught by Pam Kelly, on the second Tuesday of every month (except August and December).
Our ancestors danced on every occasion as a shared expression of harmony — they danced for birth, marriage, death, peace, the harvest, the changing of the seasons and just for the joy of it, sharing and celebrating all life’s experiences in dance. When we dance like this today we are literally stepping into the feet of those who danced the same dances in the past.
Many of the dances are fast, exciting, powerful and exhilarating, whilst others are peaceful, quiet and meditative. The music is amazing, evocative and full of ancient rhythms, many of the dances being thousands of years old.
I give an introduction to the history, background and symbolism of the dances and there is no emphasis on “getting things right” — you will gradually learn from each other and your feet will respond to the beat of the music.
Most of all, I teach the dances (and have done so for 35 years) because I want to share the joy and celebration and fun of dancing together and the energy that flows when we dance in a circle, the feeling of being a part of something as old as time and yet as new as now…
