“Long before guitars became standardised to 6 strings there were ‘Harp-Guitars’ – a combination of fretted and un-fretted strings on a single instrument, very popular in the 17th to 19th centuries. They became virtually forgotten for almost a century and are now being reinvented and rejuvenated with an explosion of creativity by modern players and guitar makers seeking new sonic experience.
Internationally broadcast composer and performer Jon Pickard is one of a new generation of artists to re-explore the possibilities of the rare genre of Harp Guitar music. The sound of his self designed 23-string instrument is both immense and beautiful, taking the listener into new soundscapes far beyond what you would expect from either a guitar or a harp. From the rich, deep and resonant ‘sub-bass’ strings right up to the highest shimmering ’super-trebles’ this is an amazing and truly unique feat of instrument making.
Combine that with Jon’s lifetime of music making, Classical Guitar training and inspired artistry and you have a highly original, moving and memorable listening experience. Jon will play a mix of traditional Guitar music alongside his original Harp Guitar compositions and arrangements. Classical, Spanish, Celtic and English themes.
