In this group you will make progress in mastering your camera, and you’ll learn to take better photographs. We will undertake individual assignments from session to session, and work on a project to exhibit in the Arts Centre at the end of each series.
The Photographers Group is run in series which consist of around 12 meetings over almost 4 months.
Early sessions focus on the basics of what the camera can do, understanding exposure, aperture and shutter speed and why they may be important, and how to use the manual and semi-manual settings, for maximum creative control. The workshops are very practical, and participants are given many opportunities to practice, experiment, fail occasionally and ultimately succeed – all with a view to learning quickly and effectively. There are regular (and often fun) assignments between sessions, and work is brought back to the group to show, enjoy and analyse and so that everyone can learn from their successes and their mistakes, and those of other group members.
In the latter part of the series we work on personal projects and then prepare our work to show in the Arts Centre Foyer Gallery. This is great practice in conceiving of a project idea, experimenting with different approaches, shooting, editing and finally preparing for printing and framing.
What do you need?
It is really helpful if participants have a camera that allows them to shoot with manual settings. If this is not you and you want to join us, there may be a chance for you to borrow a suitable camera. Cameras that have manual settings are not necessarily DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. Many mirrorless and bridge cameras allow this. If in doubt look at your camera manual (or contact us for advice). You will also need a computer to download your files to, and process as necessary.
The fee for participating in the series is £65.
Returners can join later/ongoing groups for reduced fees.
