Photography is organised through the Photography Society. The society meets in the centre’s Phoenix Room on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm September through to June and offers a varied programme of different activities - including practical workshops in photography, an annual exhibition of members’ work, and several smaller themed society competitions, summer photographic ‘field trips’, local projects and assignments for the centre itself, especially Music and Drama Group productions.
Distinguished visiting speakers – such as internationally-known and locally-based landscape photographer Charlie Waite – are also booked for an occasional ‘Star Night’ event in the main theatre.
The society describes itself as run by an ‘enthusiastic, experienced and dedicated’ committee elected annually by its members at a general meeting in May. Society members must be members of the arts centre and there is a supplementary subscription of £15pa (or pro rata at £1.50 per month) to join the society or £4 (variable) per session for non-members, payable direct to the society. There are reduced rates for the unwaged.. See 'Join Us' for more details.
Non-members may also enter competitions for £1 per entry but may not enter the main annual exhibition in January each year and are not eligible to win the ‘Photographer of the Year’ award.
