Film Society

The Film Society publishes its own programme of films annually as well as appearing in the Centre’s  half yearly programme.

The society is an integral part of the Centre and one of its most popular activities. Persons joining the Arts Centre have the option to purchase a Membership that includes the Film Society. This entitles them to free attendance at films that are part of the main programme.

A programme of 18 high quality films of international stature is shown from September through to May each year, on a Friday evening.

A limited number of tickets for non-members are available from the box office, the Shaftesbury Tourist Information Centre and on line during the preceding week. Further tickets become available for sale from 7.50pm (ten minutes before showing) on the night of each film.

Cost: £7.50, SAC members £6.50, under 18s £5.50.

Additional Film Specials, open to all are arranged for fundraising purposes. These Film Specials are not included in the Film Society membership.

The society is run by a committee elected by its members and has a designated director on the centre’s Board. Films are selected by the society’s committee in June and a members’ poll of suggested titles is taken into consideration.

Shaftesbury Arts Centre Film Society is a member of the British Federation of Film Societies and affiliated to the British Film Institute.

Shaftesbury Arts Centre is a member of Cinema for All, now in its fortieth year in the South West.

Tuesday Matinee

A regular programme of films, originally set up for the over 50s but open to all, is also shown at the Centre under the banner of Tuesday Matinees.

A main feature film is shown on the third Tuesday afternoon of every month (except August) starting at 2pm. Tickets are available ‘on the door’ (at the box office) at a cost of £5.
